the first announced 3D phone was out on MWC 2011, LG has beat the competition and showed a quite interesting device. Looks like a promissing start!

One of the interesting devices in the MWC 2011 exhibition this year is the LG Optimus 3D P920, the first device that brings the technology of three dimensional phone. It features a 1GHz TI OMAP4 processor using dual-core technology which allows it to display 3D, along with 512MB Memory Dual channel and a pair of 5 megapixel camera Video capable of capturing HD 720 in 3D or 1080p in 2D.

3D touch of a button

On the right side of the device you will find a small button that says “3D”. Clicking on it will change to a dedicated interface for 3D, and from there you can move the three-dimensional display. Once you have shown that rotating cube interface, which is of course displayed in 3D too. You can go to the photo gallery, go to Youtube 3D – you can shoot video in 3D. The video you’ve shot can be seen on the device screen without the need for special glasses, although because of the visual angle limit, only one person can see it clearly in 3D, so taking quick videos and showing them off on the spot to all your friends is out of the question unless you have a 3D TV to match it too.

The device has quite a large screen (4.3 inches) and sharp (480 × 800), it includes 8GB of internal memory with microSD card expansion option. It supports VCD playback DivX/XviD/H.264 files and HDMI port to display the content on external screen. Android Running on a system when the test was done was 2.2, a sheep-LG guarantee that it later upgraded to 2.3, the version delay was due to the custom interface added by LG.

Who needs 3D?
in our opinion, the 3D interface is convenient and useful, especially when LG has managed to centralize everything under one roof. When you move into 3D t, you feel a little strange, at first it was hard for us to get used to the new way of viewing, but to our surprise, everything worked and indeed 3D was smoothly and clearly displayed. We played a game and watched a video, and we can tell that 3D has added something unique to the experience , but it’s hard not to see it as nothing more than a nice gimmick we could get fed up with after a few uses.

The device is expected to reach Europe in May this year initially and may later also to the United States. The video shown below will not be able to display the 3D effect, but we believed it when we saw it.

Sharp has officially unveiled 2 3D glasses free 3D phones with a pretty cool spec.

It’s time for a new official glasses free 3D phone to be released, well… kinda, Its being released only for the Japanese market, so this is a bit disappointing and yet interesting.

What’s it all about?

Sharp are releasing 2 3D mobile phones, the touchscreen slate 003SH and the QWERTY-sliding 005SH.

Both has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and running Froyo android OS. THe also share the same screen resolution of 800X480 on a 3.8″ screen.

The 003SH has a 9.6 megapixel camera, while the 005SH has only 8 megapixels, both are capable of 720p HD video.
The 003SH is about to be out this December, and the 005SH in February.

Seems like pretty interesting devices, hope to get a hold of them and report soon.

I never know that Hitachi is producing smartphone, but yes they are in collaburation with Technicolor to produce a 3D mobile phone. The handset has been seen at the Technicolor’s premises in London, dubbed as the Wooo H001 mobile handset from Hitachi. The best thing about this Wooo H001 mobile phone is its ability to produce content in 3D.

Hitachi is presenting a 3D parallax view within a clamshell design, it comes with an 854×480 resolution and a 3.1-inch stereoscopic screen which can be flipped both vertically and horizontally. The 3D screen can be viewed without the 3D glasses from 90-degrees for the best result. Unfortunately, The handset only available in Asia and the Wooo H001 will not be available in west, but the manufacturers are planning to make similar phones for the west so it’s worth to wait.

South Korean company Samsung Electronics officially showed at home a new 3D mobile phone model AMOLED 3D (SCH-W960), with many features, but the one that interested us the most is the presence of AMOLED touchscreen display capable of displaying three-dimensional images without special glasses.

The phone has a special key on its side frame. And thanks to the acceleration sensor in the apparatus there is a function control your phone using gestures, when, for example, the sound of an incoming call can be disabled by turning the phone down the display. In addition, this phone has support for multitasking and a standard corporate interface Touch Wiz 2.0.

The phone will be available for local mobile operators – SKT, KT and LGT.

Brief specifications Samsung AMOLED 3D (SCH-W960):

- Support communications standards: WCDMA / HSUPA; GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz

- Dimensions: 113,9 x53, 9h13, 9 mm

-Weight: 119 gr

- Display: 3.2-inch touchscreen, a resolution of 240×400 pixels, 3D AMOLED, displays more than 16 million colors in 3D

- Camera: 3.2 MP CMOS (CMOS) with autofocus

- Built-in TV receiver standard DMB

- Available slots for microSD memory card

- Communication: Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, USB

- Other applications: electronic dictionary, calendar, currency converter, Notes, Calculator, Alarm Clock, World Clock, Stopwatch, subway maps etc

Well obviously we are exited about the 3D screen more then the rest of the stuff in the shopping bag, however it is kinda dissapointing that it will only be released for the Korean market… We want a piece of the pie too!

We all want our 3D phones and we want them now! having said that will we all walk around wearing funny 3D glasses just to operate the daily tasks on our mobile phone? Not necessarily, a technology called “Autostereoscopy” is probably the one to be used in the 3D phones manufacturing which can trick our eyes to think the image displayed is actually in 3D without walking around looking funny wearing 3D glasses.

There are a few Autostereoscopy approaches considered by the manufacturers:

Parallax barrier. A special material is placed over an LCD screen allowing each eye to see only a specific group of pixels.it is up to the brain to assemble the information into a full 3D image. However, this technique requires that the viewer will be in a specific location to be able to experience the desired effect.

Lenticular lenses. An array of cylindrical lenses is positioned on an LCD screen, and the lenses direct specific pixels of light towards each eye.

Backlight barrier. A special barrier is put between an LCD backlight and the back of a display. A 3D image is projected by manipulating the LCD backlight, thereby projecting two different, full-resolution images projected towards each eye. However, this technique requires a massive change to current LCD manufacturing technique.

We yet to know which approach if any will be adopted by the phone manufacturers, however we do know that we will update once things clears up
